The placenta is needed to nourish the foetus (O₂ + nutrients), remove its wastes (CO₂ + excreta), and secrete pregnancy-maintaining hormones.

After implantation, finger-like chorionic villi of the embryo interdigitate with the uterine tissue to form the placenta — a structural and functional connection between the developing embryo (foetus) and the mother's body. Its development is essential for the continuity of pregnancy for the following reasons:

  1. Nutrition and oxygen supply: The placenta facilitates the supply of oxygen and nutrients (glucose, amino acids, etc.) from the maternal blood to the developing embryo, since the foetus cannot feed or breathe on its own.

  2. Removal of wastes: It enables removal of carbon dioxide and excretory/waste materials produced by the embryo, passing them into the maternal blood to be eliminated.
