Spermatogenesis (in the testis) continuously produces four equal functional sperm per cell; oogenesis (in the ovary) is cyclical and produces only one functional ovum plus polar bodies.

(i) Three differences, Spermatogenesis vs Oogenesis:

  1. Spermatogenesis occurs continuously from puberty until old age in the male; oogenesis is a cyclical, discontinuous process — normally one ovum matures and is released per menstrual cycle — and it ceases at menopause.
  2. Spermatogenesis involves roughly equal cytoplasmic division, so one primary spermatocyte ultimately gives 4 functional haploid sperm; oogenesis involves highly unequal cytoplasmic division, so one primary oocyte gives only 1 functional ovum and 2–3 non-functional polar bodies (which degenerate).
  3. Spermatogenesis takes place in the seminiferous tubules of the testis; oogenesis takes place in the ovary (within developing follicles). …
