Ovulation is triggered by a sudden surge in luteinising hormone (LH) at mid-cycle.

During the menstrual cycle, rising estrogen from the growing Graafian follicle causes a rapid, large rise in luteinising hormone (LH) secreted by the anterior pituitary — the 'LH surge' — around the 14th day of a 28-day cycle.
