Oogenesis is the stepwise formation of the ovum via two meiotic divisions with unequal cytoplasm division; amniocentesis analyses amniotic fluid for prenatal genetic diagnosis.

Part 1 — Schematic stages of oogenesis (a labelled diagram cannot be rendered here, but every stage is described precisely so the flow can be drawn as a linear scheme):

  1. Oogonia (2n) — formed by mitotic division of primordial germ cells in the foetal ovary; multiply and enter meiosis before birth.
  2. Primary oocyte (2n) — formed once oogonia enter meiosis I, which arrests at the prophase-I stage and stays arrested until puberty (this dictyate/resting stage can last many years).
  3. At puberty, one primary oocyte in the growing Graafian follicle completes meiosis I each month — an unequal division producing a large secondary oocyte (n) and a small first polar body (n).
  4. The secondary oocyte begins meiosis II but arrests again at metaphase II; it is this secondary oocyte, surrounded by the zona pellucida and corona radiata, that is released at ovulation.
  5. Meiosis II is completed only if fertilisation occurs, producing the mature ovum (n) and a second polar body (n); the first polar body may also divide. …
