Apple is called a false fruit because its fleshy part comes from the receptacle, not the ovary (OR) the tapetum is the nourishing innermost layer of the anther wall that also helps build the pollen wall.

(i) Why apple is a false (virtual) fruit: A true fruit develops from the ovary alone after fertilisation. In apple, after fertilisation the ovary does develop into a small core containing the seeds, but the fleshy, edible part that we eat develops from the thalamus (receptacle) — the part of the flower to which floral parts are attached — which swells and becomes fleshy around the ovary. Because the main edible fruit tissue is receptacle-derived rather than purely ovary-derived, apple (and similarly pear) is termed a false fruit or pome.
