The photoelectric effect is the ejection of electrons from a metal surface by light of sufficiently high frequency; Einstein's equation quantifies the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted electrons.

Photoelectric effect: When light of frequency ν\nu greater than a metal's threshold frequency ν0\nu_0 falls on its surface, electrons (photoelectrons) are emitted instantaneously from the surface. This could not be explained by classical wave theory but was explained by Einstein using the photon (quantum) picture of light.

Einstein's photoelectric equation:

KEmax=hν−ϕ0KE_{max} = h\nu - \phi_0

where hνh\nu is the energy of the incident photon, ϕ0=hν0\phi_0 = h\nu_0 is the work function of the metal (minimum energy needed to free an electron), and KEmaxKE_{max} is the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted photoelectron. This shows that increasing the light's intensity increases the number of photoelectrons, but only increasing its frequency increases their maximum kinetic energy.
