Photoelectric effect: threshold frequency, current ∝ intensity, instantaneous emission. Photon: E = hν, p = h/λ, moves at c.

Three experimental observations of the photoelectric effect:

  1. For a given metal, photoelectric emission occurs only if the frequency of incident light is above a certain minimum value, called the threshold frequency ν0\nu_0; below this frequency, no photoelectrons are emitted no matter how intense the light is.
  2. For light of frequency above the threshold, the photoelectric current (number of photoelectrons emitted per second) is directly proportional to the intensity of the incident light, but the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted photoelectrons is independent of intensity and depends only on the frequency.
  3. Photoelectric emission is an instantaneous process — photoelectrons are emitted as soon as light (above threshold frequency) falls on the surface, with no appreciable time lag (< 10⁻⁹ s), even for very low intensities.

OR — Three characteristics of a photon:

  1. A photon carries energy E=hνE = h\nu, proportional to the frequency of the radiation (h = Planck's constant). …
