Using small-angle Snell's law and the exterior-angle geometry at a spherical surface, n₂/v − n₁/u = (n₂ − n₁)/R; with n₁ = 1, n₂ = n: n/v − 1/u = (n − 1)/R.

Consider a point object O on the principal axis in a medium of refractive index n₁ (say air, n₁ = 1), and refraction at a convex spherical surface of radius R separating it from a denser medium of index n₂ = n. Let the refracted rays form the image I at distance v; the object is at distance u; C is the centre of curvature.

Step 1 — Small-angle approximation:

For a ray hitting the surface at a small height h at point P, let α, β, γ be the angles the incident ray, refracted ray and the radius CP make with the axis, and i, r the angles of incidence and refraction. For paraxial (small) angles, angles ≈ their tangents.

Step 2 — Exterior angle relations (geometry of the triangle):

i = α + γ (exterior angle of triangle OPC),

γ = r + β, so r = γ − β (exterior angle of triangle IPC).

Step 3 — Apply Snell's law (small angles):

n₁ sin i = n₂ sin r → n₁ i = n₂ r (small angles).

Substitute i and r:

n₁(α + γ) = n₂(γ − β).
