Since every journal entry affects two accounts, posting is always done twice for each entry — once to the account debited and once to the account credited.
Rules of posting
- A separate account must be opened in the Ledger for every account named in the Journal, if one does not already exist.
- The account debited in the Journal is posted to the Debit side of that account in the Ledger, using the words "To" followed by the name of the account credited in the same entry.
- The account credited in the Journal is posted to the Credit side of that account in the Ledger, using the words "By" followed by the name of the account debited in the same entry.
- The date entered in the Ledger is the same as the date of the journal entry.
- The amount posted is exactly the amount shown against that entry in the Journal. …
