It is entered on whichever side is short — if the debit column falls short of the credit column, the Suspense Account is given a debit balance equal to that shortfall, and vice versa.
Why it is opened: without it, the accountant would either have to halt the entire accounting cycle (the Trading Account, the Profit and Loss Account, and the Balance Sheet all depend on a completed Trial Balance) until every error is found — which could take a long time — or force the two columns to agree by an incorrect adjustment elsewhere, which would be dishonest bookkeeping. The Suspense Account lets the trader proceed with the final accounts immediately, showing the outstanding difference openly as a distinct balance (often disclosed on the Balance Sheet as a suspense item) rather than hiding or guessing it. …
