Netiquette — Etiquette on the Network
Courtesy rules for online communication
Netiquette (a blend of network and etiquette) is the set of informal rules of polite, considerate behaviour when communicating over the internet — in emails, chats, forums, social media, and video calls. It is not a law, but following it makes online interaction pleasant, clear, and respectful. The main rules include:
- Be respectful and polite. Remember there is a real person on the other side; do not insult, abuse, or provoke ('flaming').
- Do not type in ALL CAPITALS. In online writing, capitals read as SHOUTING.
- Write clearly and check before sending. Use a meaningful subject line, correct spelling, and a courteous tone, especially in formal email.
- Respect others' privacy. Do not forward private messages, photos, or personal details without permission.
- Do not spam. Avoid sending unwanted bulk messages, chain mails, or irrelevant advertisements.
- Give credit and avoid plagiarism. Acknowledge sources when you share others' work.
- Think before you post. Anything put online can spread and be permanent; avoid posting in anger. …
