Standard Forms of the Equation of a Straight Line

A straight line is fixed by knowing enough about it — a point and a direction, or two points, or its intercepts. Each kind of information leads to a convenient standard form. All of them describe the same object; choose whichever matches the data given in a problem.

Slope–intercept form. If the line has slope mm and cuts the y-axis at (0,c)(0, c) (so cc is the y-intercept):

Note

Slope–Intercept Form

y=mx+cy = mx + c

Point–slope form. If the line has slope mm and passes through a known point (x1,y1)(x_1, y_1):

Note

Point–Slope Form

y−y1=m(x−x1)y - y_1 = m(x - x_1)

Two–point form. If the line passes through two known points (x1,y1)(x_1, y_1) and (x2,y2)(x_2, y_2):

Note

Two–Point Form

y−y1=y2−y1x2−x1 (x−x1)y - y_1 = \dfrac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}\,(x - x_1)

This is just the point–slope form with the slope computed from the two points.

Intercept form. If the line cuts the x-axis at (a,0)(a, 0) and the y-axis at (0,b)(0, b), where aa is the x-intercept and bb the y-intercept (both non-zero):

Note

Intercept Form

xa+yb=1\dfrac{x}{a} + \dfrac{y}{b} = 1

Normal (perpendicular) form. If the perpendicular dropped from the origin onto the line has length pp (p>0p > 0) and makes an angle α\alpha with the positive x-axis:

Note

Normal Form

xcos⁡α+ysin⁡α=px\cos\alpha + y\sin\alpha = p …
