Secretary — how this chapter fits your Maharashtra HSC Secretarial Practice paper
Secretary is Chapter 1 of the Maharashtra State Board (MSBSHSE) Std XI (FYJC) Secretarial Practice syllabus — the very first chapter of a subject most Commerce students meet for the first time in Class 11. Everything the two-year Secretarial Practice course builds on — the Company Secretary's statutory role, meetings and minutes, correspondence, and company-law procedure — rests on the vocabulary this chapter introduces: what a 'secretary' actually is, how many different kinds of secretaries exist in real organisations, and how the Company Secretary in particular is defined, qualified, appointed, and expected to function under the Companies Act, 2013.
This chapter covers, in order: (1) the general meaning and definition of a Secretary; (2) the different types of secretaries found across personal, non-profit, co-operative, government, and corporate settings; (3) the Company Secretary's statutory definition, required qualification, and appointment; and (4) the Company Secretary's position and day-to-day functions and duties.
A note on sources
This chapter follows the Maharashtra HSC Secretarial Practice Std XI syllabus, and cites the Companies Act, 2013 and the Company Secretaries Act, 1980 wherever a legal definition is involved. Secretarial Practice has no CBSE/NCERT counterpart subject — the statutory citations here (Companies Act sections, the ICSI qualification route) apply uniformly across India regardless of board, but the chapter's framing and sequence follow the Maharashtra Std XI Secretarial Practice syllabus specifically.
