Animals are grouped into a natural classification using several structural yardsticks. Grade of organisation ranges from cellular (little cooperation between cells), through cell-tissue and tissue-organ levels, up to the organ-system level seen in the most complex animals. Symmetry may be asymmetrical (no plane of division), radial (any plane through the central axis gives similar halves — suited to stationary or floating animals), or bilateral (only the midline plane gives mirror-image halves — associated with a definite head end and directional movement). Body cavity in triploblastic animals may be absent (acoelomate), incompletely mesoderm-lined (pseudocoelomate), or fully mesoderm-lined (coelomate/eucoelomate).
