Types of Root

On the basis of their origin, roots are classified into two types:

a. Tap root (true root). The root that develops from the radicle of the embryo during seed germination is called the tap root or true root. The main root that grows straight down is the primary root; its first-order branches are called secondary roots, and the second-order branches arising from those are tertiary roots — e.g. Pea, Bean, Sunflower. The main root together with all its branches makes up the tap root system, which is commonly seen in dicotyledonous plants. …
