Anaerobic Respiration
Cellular respiration occurs in two distinct forms - anaerobic and aerobic. Anaerobic respiration, also called fermentation, is cellular respiration that does not involve atmospheric oxygen at all. It is completed through two stages: glycolysis, and then an incomplete conversion of the glycolytic product (pyruvic acid) into lactic acid or ethanol - incomplete because, without oxygen, pyruvic acid cannot be oxidised any further the way it is in aerobic respiration.
