Both anaerobic and aerobic respiration are carried out through many small steps rather than as one single reaction, and this stepwise design serves several distinct purposes:
i. A stepwise release of the chemical bond energy locked in the respiratory substrate allows the cell to trap a much higher proportion of that energy in ATP, instead of losing it all at once as heat.
ii. Because each step has its own enzyme, and the activity of any one enzyme can be independently enhanced or inhibited by specific compounds, this stepwise arrangement gives the cell a means of finely controlling both the rate of the pathway and the amount of energy it releases, matching output to the cell's actual need at any moment. …
