Step 1. The myosin (thick) filament is a polymer built of many monomeric protein units called meromyosins.

Step 2. A single myosin molecule consists of two heavy chains (heavy meromyosin, HMM), coiled around each other in a double helix. One end of each chain projects outward from the filament; this projecting end is folded into a globular protein mass called the myosin head, and is also known as the cross bridge.

Step 3. Two light chains (light meromyosin, LMM — four in total per myosin molecule) are associated with each head. The myosin head carries a special ATPase activity, allowing it to split ATP and derive the energy used to tilt the head and pull on the actin filament during contraction.
