Multiplication of Vectors

Vectors of the same type can be added or subtracted to produce a resultant of the same type. Multiplication of vectors is different: multiplying two vectors together produces a NEW physical quantity, which may either be a scalar (in which case the operation is called the scalar product or dot product) or a vector (in which case it is called the vector product or cross product).
