A District Central Co-operative Bank (DCCB) is a co-operative bank established at the district level, registered under the co-operative societies law (in Maharashtra, the Maharashtra Co-operative Societies Act, 1960), whose principal members are the primary co-operative societies of the district and whose main work is to finance those societies, hold their surplus funds, and act as the link between them and the State Co-operative Bank above.
Four features:
- A registered co-operative body at district level — On registration it becomes a body corporate with a separate legal existence, common seal and perpetual succession, working within one district.
- Members mainly co-operative societies — Its principal members are the primary societies of the district; it is a co-operative of co-operatives.
- The central financing agency of the district — It is the one bank to which every primary society in the district turns for funds, financing their lending and holding their surplus.
- The middle (linking) tier — It stands between the primary societies at the base and the State Co-operative Bank at the apex, passing money down and surplus up. …
