Macroeconomics has several important uses, all following from its focus on the economy as a whole.

First, it helps in understanding how the ECONOMY AS A WHOLE functions — how national income, output and employment are determined at the aggregate level, something no purely microeconomic, market-by-market analysis could show.

Second, it provides the basis for a government's ECONOMIC PLANNING and POLICY-MAKING. Both fiscal policy (government taxation and spending) and monetary policy (money supply and interest rates set through the banking system) are macroeconomic tools used to influence the economy's aggregate output, employment and price level — a government cannot design either policy using microeconomic, single-market analysis alone.

Third, Macroeconomics helps explain BUSINESS CYCLES — the recurring phases of boom, recession, depression and recovery that market economies pass through — an economy-wide pattern that only aggregate analysis can capture.

Fourth, it supplies the concepts and methods used in NATIONAL INCOME ACCOUNTING, the process by which a country measures its total output and tracks its year-on-year economic growth.

Fifth, it helps a government understand and control INFLATION (a sustained rise in the general price level) and DEFLATION (a sustained fall), and to design policy responses that keep the price level reasonably stable. …
