Stock is the total quantity of a commodity in existence and available at a moment of time (potential supply); supply is the part of that stock actually brought to the market for sale at a given price. Supply can never exceed stock.

While selling goods, a producer holds a certain amount of the commodity and offers only a part of it for sale; this distinction gives rise to the terms stock and supply.
