Concept and Importance of Digital Marketing

What digital marketing means

Digital marketing (also called online marketing or internet marketing) is the use of the internet, digital devices (computers, smartphones, tablets), and electronic media to promote and sell products and services. It covers every marketing effort that reaches customers through a digital channel — a website, a search engine, social media, email, videos, mobile apps, and online advertisements.

The goal is the same as any marketing: to make people aware of an offering, to interest them in it, and to persuade them to buy and stay loyal. What is new is the medium. Instead of a hoarding on a road, the business places its message where its likely customers already spend time online, and it can measure the result of every rupee spent.

Why digital marketing is important

Digital marketing has become central to business for several clear reasons:

1. Wide and global reach. The internet crosses distances instantly. A small business in one town can reach customers across the state, the country, or even the world, without opening a physical branch anywhere.

2. Low cost compared with traditional media. Online promotion — a social media post, an email campaign, or a well-optimised website — usually costs far less than television, radio, or newspaper advertising, which makes it affordable even for small businesses and start-ups.

3. Precise targeting. A business can show its message only to the people most likely to be interested — by age, location, interests, or past behaviour — instead of broadcasting to everyone and hoping some are relevant.

4. Measurable results. Every action can be tracked: how many people saw an advertisement, clicked it, visited the website, and finally bought. This lets a business know exactly what is working and stop wasting money on what is not.

5. Two-way interaction and relationship building. Customers can comment, ask questions, review, and share. The business can reply, provide support, and build a lasting relationship — something a one-way hoarding can never do.

6. Speed and flexibility. A campaign can be launched, changed, paused, or improved within minutes based on how it is performing, rather than waiting weeks for a print run. …
