Consumer Awareness

Consumer protection ultimately depends on consumers themselves being aware of their rights, responsibilities and the redressal machinery — which is exactly why the Right to Consumer Education (Section 3) is treated as a right on its own, not merely a nice-to-have. India runs several standing efforts to build this awareness:

  1. "Jago Grahak Jago" ("Wake up, Consumer, Wake up") — the Government of India's long-running multimedia consumer-awareness campaign, run by the Department of Consumer Affairs, that publicises consumer rights, common frauds to watch for, and how to file a complaint.
  2. National Consumer Day — 24 December. Observed every year to mark the date the original Consumer Protection Act received Presidential assent in 1986; the day is used across India for consumer-awareness events, seminars and publicity.
  3. World Consumer Rights Day — 15 March. Observed internationally each year (India participates) to draw attention to consumer rights and to campaign against practices that harm consumers.
  4. National Consumer Helpline. A government-run helpline and grievance-tracking portal where a consumer can register a complaint and get guidance before, or instead of, approaching a Commission — many disputes are resolved at this stage through mediation with the seller, without any formal case.
  5. School and college curricula. Including consumer protection as part of the Maharashtra HSC (MSBSHSE) Organisation of Commerce and Management syllabus is itself a form of consumer education — building awareness of rights and responsibilities before students become active buyers and, in many cases, sellers themselves. …
