A business has a social responsibility to protect the environment. It must avoid air, water, noise and land pollution and prevent ecological imbalance because it draws resources from society and owes society a clean, healthy environment. Doing so protects public health, conserves resources, obeys the law and improves goodwill — so the statement is justified.

Business activities use natural resources (air, water, land, minerals, forests) and produce waste, smoke, effluents and noise. If uncontrolled, these damage the environment and disturb the balance of nature. Because business is a part of society, it has a social responsibility towards the environment to prevent pollution and ecological imbalance.

Why business should avoid environmental pollution and ecological imbalance — justification

  1. Protects public health — Air, water, noise and land pollution cause serious diseases and lower the quality of life; controlling pollution safeguards the health of the community, including the firm's own workers.

  2. Conserves natural resources — Business uses scarce natural resources; responsible use and pollution control preserve these resources for present and future generations (sustainable development).

  3. Maintains ecological balance — Pollution and reckless use of resources destroy forests, wildlife and the balance of nature; protecting the environment preserves this balance.

  4. Legal obligation — Environmental laws (such as pollution control Acts and the requirement of pollution-control equipment) make it compulsory for business to control pollution; avoiding it prevents penalties and legal action.
