An investor cannot directly approach the depository (NSDL or CDSL); instead the investor deals through a DP. Banks, financial institutions and stockbrokers commonly act as DPs. The DP opens and maintains the investor's demat account, credits and debits securities on demat/remat and on purchase/sale, and passes on corporate benefits like bonus and dividend information.
