Meaning. A Depository Participant (DP) is an agent of a depository — typically a bank, a stockbroker or another financial institution — that is registered with SEBI and linked to a depository (NSDL or CDSL). An individual investor cannot open an account directly with a depository; they must do so through a DP, in much the same way a bank customer deals with a branch rather than the central bank.

Role of a DP.

  1. Opening and maintaining demat accounts. The DP opens a demat account for the investor and maintains it as the electronic record of the investor's securities holdings.
  2. Processing dematerialisation and rematerialisation. The DP receives an investor's Dematerialisation Request Form (DRF) with physical certificates (or a Rematerialisation Request Form, RRF) and forwards it to the depository and, through it, to the company/RTA.
  3. Executing debits and credits. On the investor's instruction, or as part of stock-exchange settlement, the DP instructs the depository to debit or credit securities to the demat account.
  4. Providing statements and information. The DP issues periodic account statements (holding statements) so the Beneficial Owner can verify their securities holdings.
  5. Handling other requests. Pledging of securities, transmission on the death of a holder, change of address/bank details or nomination are all routed through the DP.

In short, the DP is the investor's single, everyday point of contact for every depository-related transaction.

✓Final answer

A Depository Participant is a SEBI-registered agent of a depository (bank/broker/financial institution) through which an investor opens and operates a demat account. Its role covers opening/maintaining demat accounts, processing dematerialisation/rematerialisation requests, executing debits and credits on the investor's instructions or as part of exchange settlement, issuing holding statements, and handling pledging, transmission and nomination requests.
