(A) The pyramid of energy is always upright: at every transfer of energy from one trophic level to the next (producers to herbivores to carnivores), only a small fraction (roughly 10%, per the ten-percent law) of the energy received is actually converted into the biomass/tissue of the next level; the vast majority (~90%) is lost as heat during respiration and other metabolic activities, or remains unused/undigested. Since the total energy content therefore necessarily decreases at each successive trophic level, a pyramid plotting energy content against trophic level always has a wide base (producers) narrowing steadily towards the apex (top carnivores) — it can never be inverted, unlike pyramids of numbers or biomass in some ecosystems.
(B) Energy flow in an ecosystem is always unidirectional: unlike nutrients/minerals, which are cycled repeatedly between organisms and the environment (biogeochemical cycles), energy captured by producers from sunlight is progressively transformed and dissipated as heat at every subsequent transfer along the food chain. Once this energy is lost as heat to the surroundings, it cannot be recaptured, re-concentrated or returned to fuel producers again — so energy flows only once, in one direction, from producers through successive consumer levels, and is ultimately lost from the ecosystem as heat.
