Decomposition is the process by which decomposers (chiefly bacteria and fungi, aided by detritivores such as earthworms and termites) break down complex organic compounds in dead plant and animal remains (detritus) into simpler inorganic substances, releasing nutrients back into the soil for reuse by producers. It proceeds through several overlapping steps forming a continuous cycle: (1) Fragmentation — detritivores physically break detritus into smaller particles, increasing surface area. (2) Leaching — water-soluble inorganic nutrients percolate down and get precipitated as unavailable salts in the lower soil horizon. (3) Catabolism — decomposer bacteria and fungi enzymatically degrade complex organic detritus into simpler inorganic substances.
