Step 1 (Teflon). Tetrafluoroethylene gas, CF2=CF2, is polymerized using a free-radical initiator such as hydrogen peroxide or ammonium persulphate at high pressure, adding monomer units one after another (addition polymerization) to give -[CF2-CF2]n-, teflon.

Step 2 (Bakelite, stage 1). Phenol (C6H5OH) reacts with formaldehyde (HCHO) in presence of an acid or base catalyst; formaldehyde adds -CH2OH groups onto the phenol ring at the ortho/para positions relative to -OH, giving hydroxymethylated phenol intermediates.

Step 3 (Bakelite, stage 2). These intermediates condense with each other, eliminating water between a -CH2OH group on one ring and a free position on a neighbouring ring, linking many phenol units through -CH2- bridges into the linear, still-fusible moulding powder called novolac. …
