Q.Explain vulcanisation of rubber. Which vulcanizing agents are used for the following synthetic rubber.
a. Neoprene b. Buna-N
Step 1. Vulcanisation is the process of introducing a network of cross-links into an elastomer, dramatically improving its tensile strength, stiffness, elasticity and toughness; for natural rubber this is done by heating with sulfur powder and an accelerator (e.g. ZBX) at about 150 degC, which opens the polyisoprene chain's double bonds and forms sulfur bridges between neighbouring chains.
Step 2. Neoprene (polychloroprene) is vulcanized differently, using magnesium oxide (MgO) rather than sulfur, which cross-links the chloroprene-derived chains at their double bonds in an analogous way.
Step 3. Buna-N, being a diene-based synthetic rubber (a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer) closely analogous to Buna-S, is vulcanized in the same way as natural rubber and Buna-S -- with sulfur -- since its butadiene-derived double bonds provide the same kind of cross-linking sites.
Vulcanisation introduces crosslinks between elastomer chains to improve elasticity, strength, toughness and stiffness. a. Neoprene is vulcanized with magnesium oxide (MgO). b. Buna-N is vulcanized with sulfur.
