Q.Classify the following polymers as addition or condensation.
i. PVC ii. Polyamides iii. Polystyrene iv. Polycarbonates v. Novolac
Step 1. PVC is made by addition polymerization of vinyl chloride (CH2=CHCl); polystyrene is made by addition polymerization of styrene (C6H5-CH=CH2) -- neither reaction loses a small molecule, so both are addition polymers.
Step 2. Polyamides (nylons) are made by condensation of a diacid with a diamine (or ring-opening of a lactam, treated in this chapter alongside the step-growth family), eliminating water at each amide bond -- a condensation polymer.
Step 3. Polycarbonates are made by condensation of bisphenol with phosgene, eliminating a small molecule (HCl) at each carbonate linkage -- a condensation polymer.
Step 4. Novolac, the intermediate stage of bakelite formation, is made by condensing phenol with formaldehyde, eliminating water at each -CH2- bridge -- a condensation polymer.
Addition polymers: PVC (iii is actually Polystyrene -- see list), Polystyrene. Condensation polymers: Polyamides, Polycarbonates, Novolac.
i. PVC -- Addition
ii. Polyamides -- Condensation
iii. Polystyrene -- Addition
iv. Polycarbonates -- Condensation
