Carbon dioxide travels in the blood mainly as bicarbonate, with a smaller share bound to haemoglobin and the least amount simply dissolved in plasma.

Carbon dioxide produced by the tissues is carried back to the lungs in three distinct forms, in very different proportions:

  • As bicarbonate — about 70 per cent of the carbon dioxide is carried this way, formed with the help of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, present in high concentration in the red blood cells (and in smaller amounts in plasma), which interconverts carbon dioxide and water into bicarbonate and hydrogen ions at the tissue site, and reverses the reaction at the alveoli. …
