Instruments and Drivers of Financial Inclusion in India
India has used a range of institutions, schemes and technologies to drive financial inclusion. These are the main instruments and drivers.
- Basic savings accounts (no-frills / BSBDA): simple accounts that can be opened with minimal documents, no minimum balance and free basic services — the entry point into the banking system.
- Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY): launched in 2014 as the national mission for financial inclusion, it drove the mass opening of zero-balance accounts, each usually linked to a RuPay debit card and, in many cases, accident and life-insurance cover and an overdraft facility.
- The JAM trinity: the combination of Jan-Dhan accounts, Aadhaar identity and Mobile numbers, which together make it possible to transfer benefits directly and securely to the right person.
- Business correspondents (banking agents): local agents equipped with hand-held or micro-ATM devices who provide basic banking in villages that have no branch — vital where terrain makes a full branch impractical.
- Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) and cooperative banks: institutions created specifically to serve rural and agricultural customers.
- Self-help groups (SHGs) and microfinance: small groups, often of women, who pool savings and obtain group loans through the SHG–bank linkage programme, frequently under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM).
- Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT): routing subsidies, wages and pensions straight into accounts. …
