(A) Four central problems of an economy:

  1. What to produce and in what quantities: Since resources are limited, an economy must decide which goods and services to produce, and how much of each — e.g., more consumer goods or more capital goods. This choice is represented by choosing a point on the Production Possibility Frontier (PPF).
  2. How to produce: The economy must decide the technique of production to use for the chosen goods — labour-intensive or capital-intensive methods — so as to produce the desired output at the lowest cost given available resources and technology.
  3. For whom to produce: Since not everyone's wants can be fully satisfied, the economy must decide how the produced goods and services are to be distributed among the members of society — the problem of distribution of national income/output.
  4. Problem of Economic Efficiency (and growth): The economy must try to achieve full and efficient utilisation of its scarce resources so that it neither wastes resources (a point inside the PPF, indicating inefficiency) nor remains static — it should also try to grow its productive capacity (outward shift of the PPF) over time. …
