Chondrichthyes and Osteichthyes differ chiefly in their skeleton material and buoyancy organ, while Urochordata and Cephalochordata differ in how long the notochord persists — briefly named examples for each below.

a. Chondrichthyes vs Osteichthyes

  • Chondrichthyes are cartilaginous fishes with a streamlined, marine body supported entirely by a cartilaginous endoskeleton; the notochord persists throughout life, the mouth is ventral, gill slits are separate without an operculum, and, lacking an air bladder, they must swim constantly to avoid sinking. The heart is two-chambered. Example: Scoliodon (dog fish).
  • Osteichthyes are bony fishes found in both marine and freshwater habitats, with a bony endoskeleton, a terminal mouth, four pairs of gills covered by an operculum, and — crucially — an air bladder that lets them regulate buoyancy without needing to swim constantly. The heart is also two-chambered. Example: Labeo (Rohu).
