Organisms, especially plants, produce a huge diversity of chemical compounds, broadly grouped into:
- Primary metabolites — compounds that are directly involved in normal growth, development and reproduction of the organism, and have well-established metabolic roles. Examples include amino acids, sugars, common fatty acids, nucleic acids, proteins, and chlorophyll.
- Secondary metabolites — compounds whose function in the plant's basic physiology (growth, photosynthesis, reproduction) is not clearly established or apparent; they are often produced as by-products of primary metabolic pathways. Examples include alkaloids, flavonoids, rubber, essential oils, antibiotics, pigments, and toxins. Even though they lack an obvious physiological role in the plant, many secondary metabolites have great practical importance to humans (e.g. as drugs, dyes, flavours, and industrial raw materials) and often serve ecological roles such as defence against herbivores/pathogens. …
