The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is structurally continuous with the outer nuclear membrane, which is why ER often appears budding off the nucleus in electron micrographs.

The endoplasmic reticulum is an extensive membranous network of tubules, vesicles and flattened sacs (cisternae) that pervades the cytoplasm. Its membrane is directly continuous with the outer membrane of the nuclear envelope, so the perinuclear space is continuous with the ER lumen. This continuity allows newly synthesised proteins and lipids to move directly from the nuclear envelope into the ER system.
