When muscles are worked strenuously and oxygen supply becomes insufficient, they respire anaerobically, and the resulting lactic acid build-up causes fatigue.

During normal, moderate activity, skeletal muscles obtain their ATP mainly through aerobic respiration. But during prolonged or vigorous exercise:

  1. The oxygen supply to the muscle fibres can become insufficient to meet the high energy demand.
  2. Under this oxygen deficit, the muscle shifts to anaerobic glycolysis, breaking down glycogen/glucose without oxygen.
  3. This produces lactic acid as an end product (instead of completing the full aerobic breakdown to CO2 and water).
  4. Lactic acid accumulates in the muscle tissue, lowering the local pH and interfering with muscle fibre contraction, along with depletion of ATP and glycogen reserves. …
