The scutellum is the single, shield-shaped cotyledon of a monocot (grass) embryo that lies adjacent to the endosperm and helps absorb nutrients from it during germination.

In a typical monocotyledonous seed (e.g. maize), the embryo consists of one large, shield-shaped cotyledon called the scutellum, positioned on one side, pressed close to the endosperm. On the opposite side, the embryonal axis has a plumule (enclosed in a sheath called the coleoptile) at one end and a radicle (enclosed in a sheath called the coleorhiza) at the other end.
