C4 plants outperform C3 plants in biomass production mainly because their anatomy (Kranz anatomy) concentrates CO2 around RuBisCO in bundle sheath cells, virtually eliminating the wasteful process of photorespiration.

In C3 plants, RuBisCO — the enzyme that fixes CO2 in the Calvin cycle — also has an oxygenase activity. When atmospheric CO2 is low relative to O2 (common on hot, dry days when stomata partially close), RuBisCO binds O2 instead of CO2, initiating photorespiration. This pathway consumes ATP/NADPH and releases previously-fixed carbon as CO2 without producing any sugar or ATP, lowering net photosynthetic efficiency.
