Cytotaxonomy classifies organisms using cell-level features like chromosome number, structure, and behaviour, alongside the usual morphological criteria.

Traditional taxonomy classified organisms mainly on visible external and internal morphological characters. As microscopy and cell biology advanced, taxonomists began using additional lines of evidence to refine and support classification. Cytotaxonomy is one such approach — it looks at cytological (cell-related) features such as the number of chromosomes a species carries, their structure (size, shape, banding pattern), and their behaviour during mitosis and meiosis. Species that are truly closely related tend to share similar chromosome numbers and structures, so this evidence helps confirm or revise relationships suggested by morphology alone.
