Gay Lussac's law says reacting gas volumes (and product gas volumes), at the same temperature and pressure, always relate by simple whole-number ratios.

Gay Lussac's Law of Gaseous Volumes (1808) states: when gases react together, they do so in volumes which bear a simple ratio to one another and to the volume of the product(s), if all volumes are measured at the same temperature and pressure.

Example 1: Formation of hydrogen chloride gas —

H2(g) + Cl2(g) → 2HCl(g)

1 volume of hydrogen combines with 1 volume of chlorine to give 2 volumes of hydrogen chloride. This is a simple 1:1:2 ratio.

Example 2: Formation of ammonia —

N2(g) + 3H2(g) → 2NH3(g)

1 volume of nitrogen reacts with 3 volumes of hydrogen to give 2 volumes of ammonia — a 1:3:2 ratio, again simple whole numbers.
