Q.Let UU be the set of all boys and girls in a school, GG be the set of all girls in the school, BB be the set of all boys in the school, and SS be the set of all students in the school who take swimming. Some, but not all, students in the school take swimming. Draw a Venn diagram showing one of the possible interrelationship among sets UU, GG, BB and SS.

The universal set UU partitions into disjoint sets GG (girls) and BB (boys), while SS (swimmers) overlaps with both since some—but not all—students swim; the Venn diagram shows GG and BB side-by-side inside UU, with SS cutting across both.

Understanding the sets and their relationships

The problem gives us four sets with natural constraints. UU is the universal set containing every student. Since every student is either a girl or a boy (and not both), GG and BB partition UU: they are disjoint and their union is UU. In symbols, G∩B=∅G \cap B = \emptyset and G∪B=UG \cup B = U.

The set SS represents students who swim. The phrase "some, but not all" tells us two things: at least one student swims (S≠∅S \neq \emptyset), and at least one student does not swim (S≠US \neq U). Crucially, nothing restricts swimmers to one gender—both girls and boys can swim. So SS can overlap with both GG and BB.

Constructing the Venn diagram

  1. Draw the universal set UU.

Start with a rectangle representing all students in the school.

  2. Partition UU into GG and BB.

Inside the rectangle, draw two non-overlapping regions (circles or ovals) that together fill UU. Label one GG (girls) and the other BB (boys). These must not intersect because no student is both a girl and a boy.

  3. Add the set SS cutting across both GG and BB.

Draw a third region (another circle or oval) that overlaps with both GG and BB, but does not cover either completely. Label it SS. This shows:

    • Some girls swim: S∩G≠∅S \cap G \neq \emptyset
    • Some boys swim: S∩B≠∅S \cap B \neq \emptyset
    • Some girls don't swim: there's a part of GG outside SS
    • Some boys don't swim: there's a part of BB outside SS …
