Heating a gas in a rigid closed vessel keeps its volume fixed, so by the ideal gas law the pressure must rise in direct proportion to the absolute temperature.

The ideal gas equation is

PV=nRTPV = nRT

For a fixed amount of gas (n constant) sealed in a closed, rigid vessel, the volume V cannot change — the container's walls don't move. So V and n are both constant here, leaving

P=(nRV)TP = \left(\dfrac{nR}{V}\right) T

Since nR/VnR/V is a constant for this situation, P is directly proportional to the absolute temperature T:

PT=constant(Gay-Lussac’s Law / Pressure Law)\dfrac{P}{T} = \text{constant} \quad \text{(Gay-Lussac's Law / Pressure Law)}
