Under British colonial policy, India's famed handicraft industries (handloom textiles, metal work, etc.), which had earlier enjoyed a worldwide market, were deliberately undermined through discriminatory tariffs that favoured British manufactured imports while taxing Indian exports, combined with the flooding of Indian markets with cheap machine-made goods from England's industrialising factories. This had severe consequences: (i) Unemployment of artisans -- millions of craftsmen and weavers who depended on these industries for their livelihood lost their employment as demand for their products collapsed, and most of them, lacking alternatives, were forced to crowd into agriculture, increasing pressure on land and reducing per capita land availability.
