The Structure of Manipur's Economy
The Structure of Manipur's Economy
Manipur is a small, landlocked, hilly state in the North East, with a central valley (the Imphal valley) surrounded by hill districts. Its economy reflects this geography.
Agriculture and allied activities are the backbone of livelihood for a large share of the population, especially in the valley, where rice (paddy) is the main crop. Manipur is known for its aromatic black rice (chak-hao), and for horticulture produce such as pineapples, oranges and ginger. Farming in the hills often takes the form of shifting cultivation (jhum). Agriculture supports many people but contributes a relatively modest share of the state's total output.
Handloom and handicrafts form the largest traditional/cottage industry of the state and are a major source of employment, particularly for women weavers. Manipur has one of the largest concentrations of handloom weavers and craft persons in the North East. This sector carries both economic and cultural importance.
Large-scale industry is limited. Difficult terrain, distance from major markets, weak transport links and a small local market have kept factory-based manufacturing small. Most industrial activity is in small units, agro-processing, bamboo-based products and crafts.
The services (tertiary) sector is now the largest part of the state's economy — government administration, trade, transport, education, health, banking and a growing tourism sector together account for the biggest share of state output. In recent years the tertiary sector has contributed by far the largest portion of Manipur's Gross State Value Added, with the primary (agriculture) sector next and the secondary (industry) sector the smallest. The exact shares change from year to year, so they are best understood as a broad pattern rather than fixed numbers.
| Sector | Approximate share of Manipur GSVA | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tertiary (services) | Largest — of the order of two-thirds to ~70% | Trade, transport, public administration, education, health dominate |
| Primary (agriculture & allied) | Roughly a fifth | Paddy, horticulture, handloom-linked activity |
| Secondary (industry) | Smallest — around a tenth | Limited large industry; cottage/handicraft-heavy |
Shares are approximate and vary year to year; treat as an indicative structure, not exact figures.
