Part (a): a mature embryo sac is 7-celled/8-nucleate (egg apparatus of egg + 2 synergids, 3 antipodals, a central cell with 2 polar nuclei); triple fusion is the fusion of one male gamete with the two polar nuclei to give the triploid primary endosperm nucleus. Part (b): FSH drives follicle growth and estrogen (endometrium proliferates), the LH surge causes ovulation, LH forms the corpus luteum whose progesterone makes the endometrium secretory; if no fertilisation, hormones fall and menstruation occurs.

Part (a)

(i) Structure of the mature embryo sac. The embryo sac (female gametophyte) develops from the functional megaspore by three free-nuclear mitotic divisions, giving 8 nuclei that organise into a 7-celled, 8-nucleate structure:

  • At the micropylar end lies the egg apparatus - one egg cell (oosphere) flanked by two synergids. The synergids bear thickenings, the filiform apparatus, that guide the entry of the pollen tube.
  • At the chalazal end are three antipodal cells.
  • In the middle is a large central cell containing two polar nuclei; these often fuse to form a single diploid secondary nucleus.

Thus six of the cells are uninucleate and the central cell contains two nuclei - accounting for 8 nuclei but only 7 cells.

(ii) Triple fusion. After a pollen tube enters the embryo sac (usually through a synergid), it releases two male gametes - this is double fertilisation.

  • One male gamete fuses with the egg to form the diploid zygote (syngamy).
  • The second male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei of the central cell. Because three haploid nuclei (one male gamete + two polar nuclei) fuse together, this event is called triple fusion, and it produces the triploid (3n) primary endosperm nucleus (PEN). …
