Male gametophyte development occurs in the anther; female gametophyte development occurs in the ovule within the ovary.

A typical angiosperm flower has two whorls concerned with reproduction: the androecium (stamens) and the gynoecium (carpels/pistil). Each anther, the terminal, bilobed part of a stamen, contains four microsporangia (pollen sacs); within these, microspore mother cells undergo meiosis to form microspore tetrads, and each microspore develops into a pollen grain (the male gametophyte), which on maturity contains a vegetative cell and a generative cell (later dividing into two male gametes).
