Sporopollenin is the highly resistant organic material that makes up the exine (outer wall) of pollen grains.

The pollen grain has a two-layered wall. The outer layer, the exine, is hard and made of one of the most resistant organic materials known — sporopollenin. Sporopollenin can withstand very high temperatures and strong acid and alkali treatment; no enzyme is known that can degrade it. Because of this extreme resistance, the exine (and hence the pollen's characteristic surface pattern) is very well preserved in sediments and rock strata, and pollen grains are excellent material for the study of past vegetation, climate, and evolution of plants (palynology). …
